Regarding the "Rust" Debacle

First, our sympathies and condolences go out to the victims of this tragic event. All the more tragic because it was entirely preventable. Although investigation continues and statements are still being gathered, certain things emerge as clear as a cloudless high noon in the desert.

The event was negligence from start to finish; a complete breakdown of long-established and accepted policy and procedures that have been in place for thousands of film, television, and theatre projects over decades and decades.

Responsibilities were ignored, including lack of safety briefings, "chain of custody" procedures, and physical management and handling of the prop weapons. Human beings by nature are fallible, but there is no excuse or justification for the actions that lead to the heartbreaking death and harm to our fellow 'sister' and 'brother'.

It has left the film industry, and my fellow armorers/weapons wranglers, reeling with disbelief and anguish.

We want to assure our clients that we have safety as first priority. Stage Armament Solutions regularly reviews our policies and procedures, and validates them against our colleagues' similar approaches. As news broke of this tragedy, we immediately performed a deep dive review and enhancement of our own documentation. A copy of our policy for safety and handling of props will be supplied with every contract we write, and requires an acknowledgement of reading and understanding from our clients.

Over twenty years or so of working with prop weapons and clients, we have well over 300 (about 315 at last count) projects on our books. EACH ONE has concluded without a single injury to cast or crew related to our prop weapons.

Although we are pleased with this track record, it is not a "brag". It is merely THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE for every project, nothing more and surely nothing less.

Additionally, we vet our clients as best we can. We want to be sure we are working with responsible and safety-conscious filmmakers and crew. In the past we have declined to quote projects or even withdrew our support when we could not be absolutely certain that our props and instruction would be treated properly and with complete safety, and will continue as needed to ensure that our reputation remains untarnished.
